Ngata Vake

Penei i-vânaga-mai-ai a Porotu: This is what Porotu told me:

He tagata tonei, i-tu'u-mai-ai a Kuá-Ira a Kuá-Raparega, Gata Vake te igoa. There was a man here, when Ira and Raparenga ⁹³ arrived here with their companions ^93a. Ngata Vake [was his] name.

Kai agiagi e Kuá-Raparega te hakaaraga o Gata Vake. Raparenga and his companions did not know [who were] the ancestors of Ngata Vake.

Note 93 Ira and Raparenga are two of the colonists who, according to the tradition referred to in later chapters, preceded Hotu Matu'a as scouts.

Note 93a Kuá = and others. See dictionary: used preceding persons' names, or inserted between the article and the person's name, to mean "and others, and companions" e.g. A kua Ira, Ira and his companions.
